At its Jan. 14 meeting, the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach elected Kathleen Brown as chair and Carolyn Weems as vice chair. Brown has served on the School Board for two years and Weems for 22 years.
Michael Nelson - Assistant Principal
Mr. Michael Nelson is a dedicated educator and former military service member who brings a wealth of experience and passion to his role in the academic community. Originally from Pensacola, Florida, Mr. Nelson began his higher education journey at Pensacola Junior College, where he played baseball. He later transferred to Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas, earning his undergraduate degree.
Driven by a desire to serve his country, Mr. Nelson joined the military, where he undertook rigorous training and developed a range of skills that have been invaluable throughout his career. After completing his military service, he pursued a Master of Science in Education from Old Dominion University and subsequently earned an Educational Specialist degree with an endorsement in Educational Leadership from The George Washington University.
Mr. Nelson's career in education began as a teacher and baseball coach at Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach, where he also coached football for a decade. In 2011, he transitioned into administration, becoming an Assistant Principal at Ocean Lakes High School. Mr. Nelson came to Kellam in the 2023-24 school year and lives in this community with his wife and two children. His diverse background and commitment to excellence have made him the leader he is today, and he aspires to inspire those he works with in challenging each student to find and pursue their passion in life.
