2021 Golf Tryout Information

Sports Physicals

If you were not able to take advantage of the school physical, be sure to get a physical from your doctor on the proper VHSL form and dated after May 1, 2021.  This form can be found on the Kellam website. Be sure to bring your completed physical to the first day of tryouts or have turned in at Student Activities.  Forms can be obtained from the Student Activities Office.  No athlete will be allowed to tryout without a sports physical on the proper form.

The first official tryout date is Monday August 2nd, @ 12:30 p.m.  We will meet at Kempsville golf course next to the putting green.  Come early to warm-up since we will play 18 holes after a brief meeting (first tee time at 1:00pm).  The greens fees are covered by the school, but range balls and other expenses are up to each athlete.  Each day the coach will evaluate each athlete’s potential for team membership and will invite those that should continue the tryout process to the next day’s round.

Every golfer should obtain and begin reading the Rules of Golf

(Start familiarizing yourself with common situations regarding rules)

To be chosen as a team member, golfers will need to demonstrate many things. It   is not just about the score you shoot. Several factors are considered when picking the team. Don’t be nervous about the score.

  • Academic eligibility
  • Proper golf etiquette, honesty, and sportsmanship
  • Positive attitude about self, others, and the game
  • Proper attire on the course
  • Fit in team environment
  • Willingness to work (practices) to improve!!!!!

Start playing as much as possible and practicing on days that you don’t play.  Most players practice their strengths and avoid their weaknesses-try to do the opposite, you’ll be a better player!  Start to play rounds under match conditions. Play as much as possible by playing it down (summer rules) Go to local clinics, camps, or lessons.  We will be playing the ball down and from the blue tees in matches.

Play VSGA and local Junior Tournaments

Please call if you have any questions.  Again, I encourage you to play in some local tournaments to gain experience.
